3D Imaging and Measurement has been the subject of much interest in the past decade. Various techniques and approaches have been used to get 3D profiles of rough, specular, transparent and opaque samples with resolutions from nano-meter to micro-meter to millimeter. If the evolution of these techniques is followed, it appears to follow the evolution of optics through the centuries. In optics, light was considered as a particle (corpuscles) during Newton’s era, then came the wave theory of light in the 18th century and finally in the last century, light was thought of being made up of special particles called photons. 3D metrology to some extent has followed similar route – Binocular vision and structured light was the geometric optics approach to 3D Optical Metrology which was followed by interferometry and now we are back to ray theory with computational optics and light field. In this paper, this journey would be exemplified using fringe profilometer, d’holoscopeTM and Transport of Intensity Equations with Light Field.
